Scott Van Pelt calls out WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert’s alleged Caitlin Clark take as ‘preposterous’
SportsCenter host Scott Van Pelt has publicly criticized WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert for her alleged comments about Caitlin Clark, which were first revealed by player Napheesa Collier. Engelbert reportedly stated that Clark should be grateful for earning $16 million off the court, attributing it to the platform provided by the WNBA.
Van Pelt labeled Engelbert's alleged remarks as "preposterous" during a broadcast, arguing that Clark has significantly benefited the WNBA rather than the other way around. He highlighted Clark's impact during her college years at Iowa, noting that her games drew record-high ratings and boosted the league's visibility. Van Pelt emphasized that the WNBA has gained from Clark's presence, citing increased franchise valuations and describing her as a "Tiger Woods tide that lifts all boats," even though Clark missed much of the season due to injury.
Additionally, Van Pelt addressed the ongoing tensions in the WNBA, pointing out that players are seeking a larger share of revenue in the upcoming Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations after the current one expires in October 2025. He commended Collier for her bravery in exposing Engelbert's comments and called on the commissioner to explain how such sentiments could arise, suggesting that a failure to respond would send a negative message.
As of now, neither Engelbert nor Clark has publicly responded to the allegations. Clark, who spent most of the year injured and on the bench for the Indiana Fever, is expected to return for the 2026 season following the team's playoff exit against the Las Vegas Aces.
