Miles McBride out for Knicks’ key NBA Cup game in rough injury blow
The New York Knicks announced that guard Miles McBride has been ruled out of Tuesday's NBA Cup quarterfinal game in Toronto due to a left ankle sprain.
McBride sustained the injury during a drive to the basket in Sunday's victory over the Orlando Magic. He fell in pain but remained in the game to attempt his free throws. Subsequent X-rays were negative, and he underwent an MRI on Monday while wearing a walking boot.
His absence is a significant loss for the team, as McBride was in the midst of a breakout month, averaging 14.6 points and shooting 57.4% from three-point range over his last seven games. His role and playing time had increased following a shoulder injury to Landry Shamet, highlighting his value to a guard rotation lacking depth.
Head Coach Tom Brown downplayed the potential crisis, stating the backup point guard role is not burdened with heavy playmaking duties, describing it as a "push-man initiator." With McBride out, Tyler Kolek is set to back up starter Jalen Brunson. Brown emphasized that having players who can simply pass, dribble, and initiate the offense is sufficient for their system.
However, McBride's specific contributions as an efficient three-point shooter, shot creator, and tenacious defender are difficult to replace. The Knicks, who hold a 16-7 record, are 0-3 this season in games McBride has missed, including two due to a family bereavement and one due to illness.
