EPL: Clear red card, Shearer slams VAR over Dalot challenge

20/01 10:01

Former England striker Alan Shearer has criticized the decision to show a yellow card to Diogo Dalot during Sunday's Manchester derby, arguing it should have been a red card.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Shearer stated that VAR got the decision "terribly wrong" and that it was a clear red card, regardless of whether the contact was glancing. He acknowledged the on-field referee might have had difficulty seeing the incident but emphasized that VAR officials had ample footage to make a correct call for a sending-off.

The incident involved referee Anthony Taylor issuing a yellow card, a decision supported by video assistant referee Craig Pawson, who deemed the contact "glancing and not with excessive force."

This ruling has sparked renewed debate among pundits and fans, highlighting ongoing discussions about VAR consistency and differing standards for serious foul play between the Premier League and European competitions.
