Austria downplays Beermen’s edge vs. TNT five in PBA finals
The San Miguel Beermen hold a significant historical advantage over the TNT Tropang 5G, with a 6-1 head-to-head record in their past PBA championship meetings. Their upcoming clash in the 2026 Philippine Cup Finals will mark their eighth championship showdown, with the Beermen aiming for their seventh title against this opponent.
Despite this dominant record, Beermen coach Leo Austria cautioned that defending their title will not be easy, noting high public expectations for another dominant performance. He acknowledged TNT's strong play in the semifinals, which earned them their spot in the finals.
The Beermen advanced to the finals by defeating the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings 4-2 in their semifinal series. This marks San Miguel's fourth consecutive Philippine Cup finals appearance, while TNT is appearing in its fourth consecutive conference finals overall.
TNT enters the series facing significant injury challenges, with key players RR Pogoy (hamstring) and Kelly Williams (ankle) ruled out. Coach Chot Reyes stated the team has addressed depth concerns by adding players like Calvin Oftana and Rey Nambatac to reinforce the roster.
San Miguel's strength lies in its core of star players, including nine-time MVP June Mar Fajardo, team captain C.J. Perez, and veteran Marcio Lassiter. The finals series begins with Game 1 scheduled at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.
